Rockridge is one of the most desirable neighborhoods of Oakland, appealing to a wide spectrum of buyers. Commonly divided into “Lower, Central and Upper” Rockridge, it is a relatively large area which falls entirely within the ZIP code 94618. Generally speaking, the Rockridge boundaries are the Temescal district/51st Street, Telegraph Avenue/North Oakland, City of Berkeley, Highway 13 and Moraga Avenue.

Oakland's Rockridge Neighborhood

Much of Upper Rockridge was rebuilt after the 1992 Oakland Hills Fire, and offers larger homes in almost every imaginable style of architecture, many with sweeping views of San Francisco Bay, Marin County and beyond. Central and Lower Rockridge, which are more centrally located, feature classic architecture from the 1910’s – 1930’s with primarily Craftsman bungalows, Arts and Crafts and some Mediterranean style homes. This is a fantastic walking neighborhood, with lovely tree-lined streets, nearby shops and a great community atmosphere. A very active and involved community, there seems to always be something going on!  See the Rockridge community web site.

Perhaps the primary benefit of Rockridge is the location, which is close almost all of the best East Bay shopping districts: Rockridge, College Avenue, Piedmont Avenue, Montclair, Elmwood and Claremont. Rockridge is sometimes called a “suburb” of San Francisco, which is a complement due in part to the many fine restaurants, shops and markets stretching along College Avenue – and downtown San Francisco is only twenty minutes away. And of course the University of California, and all that Berkeley has to offer with, is just down the street. Plus, the fabulous Temescal Farmers Market is open every Sunday on Claremont Avenue, featuring the best of Northern California’s harvest and food goodies. Getting around the larger Bay Area is also convenient, with Rockridge BART, major freeways and casual carpool right nearby.

One of Oakland’s top-rated schools, Chabot Elementary, is located in Rockridge and has a very active parent community supporting a wide range of activities.

Hillcrest Elementary School, also highly rated, serves portions of the Upper Rockridge community and is considered one of the attractions of this area for young families.
